"When is the best time to book a newborn session" is probably my most asked question and it really breaks down to two parts. The first part is how far out from your due date should you contact your photographer. Personally, I always advocate booking as early as you can. While most of the time we wont know babies ACTUAL birthday, booking by your due date gives me a time frame to block out specifically for you. For this same reason I only book a certain amount of newborn sessions a month to insure plenty of flexibility for my new parents. Booking ahead also insures plenty of time for us to be able to chat about any ideas or questions you may have for your session ahead of time.
The next part of the question would be how old should baby be at the time of the session. If I'm being honest it really depends on the baby. I have had wide awake 5 day olds and sleepy 4+ week old babies. With that being said, there does seem to be an overall "sweet" spot that MOST newborns tend to fall in. That sweet spot is in between four days and two weeks. This age range seems to have them still new enough that they are sleepy and "curly"( aka curl up into those sweet little womb like poses like the one below). When babies are a month or older we can still capture some adorable moments but then we move more into the "milestone" category and the focus of the images is geared towards babies newfound expressions!
I hope this was helpful and please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!
